The Africa Film Academy sets to empower 1000 youths in its quest to promote capacity in different aspects of film making and promote the growth of the motion picture industry is set to train over 1000 youths across the continent over the next 12 months.
The first in the series of the trainings that will take place across the continent is scheduled for February 25th – 26th in Lagos, Nigeria.
Workshops with the theme SO YOU CAN ACT, SO YOU WANT TO ACT? will run master classes that will be led by notable resource persons and industry leaders which include multiple award winners and two-time AMAA winners, Joke Silva and Kunle Afolayan.
Other resource persons include Mildred Okwo, Sonny Mcdon, Segun Arinze, Bond Emeruwa among others.

The Commonwealth Foundation puts out a call for short film proposals from filmmakers age 18 or ove:

The Commonwealth Foundation is inviting filmmakers from across the Commonwealth to submit an idea for a short film about relationships. Individual filmmakers or collectives should submit a proposal which explores the theme of love in its broadest sense, whether inter-racial, inter-generational or within and between the sexes. The theme should be relevant to the filmmaker and their community.

We’re looking for original, bold and authentic films in any genre which entertain as well as stimulate and encourage debate both locally and globally.

Deadline for receipt of applications is 31 January 2012 (5pm GMT)

The entry guidelines are as follows:

Entry guidelines The film may be a drama or documentary, or a mixture of different genres, comedy or a more serious approach. The films can be made in your local language but in these cases must include sub-titles in English. The main aim of the film should be to engage and entertain, as well as stimulate and encourage debate, i.e. it should be an oblique and subtle exploration of a challenging issue in your community. The film should be up to 20 minutes (maximum) in length. Funding of between £3,000 and £8,000 per film is available. You must be available for an initial skills-building workshop in early March 2012 and available to make the film between March and May 2012. Depending on the sensitivity of the subject matter, the films may be made outside your community or country if necessary or appropriate. The resulting films will be shown locally and internationally to stimulate open debate around these issues, in local communities as well as national television and radio. The films may be shown anonymously if particularly sensitive.

Two day Plateau International Film Festival set to begin in Jos on November 25

The 2nd Edition of Plateau International Film Festival (PIFF) commences November 25th, at the National Film Institute, Jos. This festival is being organized by Media initiative on film and social development, a non-governmental organisation that focuses on social and economic development. Its aim is to use film and media to educate, entertain and to promote creativity, credibility, responsibility and good governance. The 1st Edition of Festival (2010) was a success, recording over 40 film entries, and with screening, discussions, and seminars. We believe this edition will be a greater success because of the teamwork and drive by the PIFF organizing team in planning and executing this year’s event. Our major partners are Alliance Française and Plateau State Tourism Corporation. Again this year, the festival will be a platform for education, interaction and information. The recognition of film as a tool for peaceful co-existence is what informed our theme: Art and Peace. The Director General of the National Film and Video Censors Board, Mr. Emeka Mba, will deliver the Keynote address. Scholars, administrators and seasoned filmmakers will discuss relevant topics as well as films screened for the purpose. The festival will also feature Master Classes/Workshops in Directing, Scriptwriting, and Film Music as well as a seminar on Information Management for relevant state and federal ministries as well as Local Government Council Information Officers. Other major supporters of the festival are: Nigerian Television Authority, Jos Network Centre (NTA), Nigerian Film Corporation (NFC), and Plateau Radio Television Corporation (PRTV). While many people hold strong views about the almajiri-system, sadly, the almajirai themselves are rarely listened to. This film hopes to offer an insight into their perspectives and concerns. Nine young people from three different Qur’anic schools in Kano State have been trained to write the script for this film, to do most of the acting, to handle the camera, and to give the stage directions.
This film shows their views and experiences they made while living as almajirai in Kano.

This film project is a cooperation of Goethe-Institut Kano with the Child Almajiri Empowerment and Support Initiative (CAESI) and the Department of Mass Communication, Bayero University Kano.

TUNDE KELANI

A legend in the Nigerian Film industry Tunde Kelani belongs to a set of Nigerian directors who combine well-trained professionals with the latest technology to produce high quality films that adhere to international standards. Kelani has distinguished himself as one of the most experienced film makers in Nigeria, by his work in the 1980s as a celluloid cinematographer for Nigerian television and film productions. Since establishing Mainframe Productions in Oshodi, Lagos in 1992, Kelani has consistently released films like ‘Thunderbolt’ and ‘Saworoide’, which have become favourites in Yoruba households across Africa, Europe, and the Americas.

JACK CONROY

A legend in the Irish Film industry Jack Conroy has shot more than 20 international feature films while also working regularly in television. He is best known for his stunning cinematography on the Oscar winning and nominated films My Left Foot and The Field, starring Daniel Day-Lewis and Richard Harris, respectively.
When one looks at the list of people that have been portrayed by his camera, it reads like a virtual who’s who of the world’s greatest stars. Sophia Loren, Mickey Rourke, Christopher Lambert, Sir John Mills, James Coburn, Pierce Brosnan, Burt Reynolds, George. C. Scott, Bob Hoskins, John Hurt, Richard Harris, Angela Lansbury, Harvey Keitel, and Omar Sharif to name a few.
