Inuwa, Umma Aminu, (2009), Kutsen Bak’in Al’adu cikin Finafinan Hausa. PhD Dissertation. Sashen Koyar da Harsunan Nijeriya. Bayero University. May 2009.

[Abstract in English: “This research work titled “Kutsen Bak’in Al’adu Cikin Finafinan Hausa” (Intrusion of Foreign Cultures in Hausa Films). Looked into films produced from the year 2000-2008. This work is conducted in order to peep through how near and far culture has influence on Hausa films. Hausa films emerged after the coming of the Europeans into the country beginning from majigi cinema which came to Hausaland in 1933, with the first screening in Kano a day after sallah outside Gidan Shettima on 29/7/1993. But majigi became well institutionalized in Northern Nigeria in the early 1950s (Larkin, 2004:47-48), to that of television in 1960 up to the days of video films between 1980 to 1984. Therefore, this research centres on finding out the extent to which foreign cultures such as European, Indian and Arab cultures penetrates into Hausa films. Hausa film makers do not inject foreign culture in order to make their products saleable as well as to make their films more attractive and acceptable to viewers.”]

Abubakar, Ali Liman (2006), “Storyline Structure in Hausa Home Videos: An Analysis of Mai Kudi, Sanafahna, and Albashi.” MA Thesis. Mass Communications. Bayero University. September. (PDF Available)

[Abstract: “This study analyzes storyline structure in three Hausa home videos; Mai Kudi (The Rich Man), Sanafahna (with time truth shall dawn) and Albashi (Salary). The study measures storyline structure in these films against a Hollywood film industry model of story writing “the Hero’s Journey”. It uses narrative analysis as its analytical tool, and narrative theory as its framework. After analyzing these videos, the study found that the major elements of storyline structure in Vogler’s model formed the framework of the storyline structure in Hausa home videos analyzed. However, in spite of the preponderance of these elements within the storyline structure, there are significant variations to Vogler’s model. Specifically, Vogler’s model has some twelve stages spread on the universal structure of storytelling, i.e. beginning, middle and end. Few of these stages were found to exist in Hausa narrative structure, perhaps due to cultural differences between Western, Indian and Hausa cultures. The study therefore recommends screenwriters and producers to be aware of the existence of standard models of scriptwriting. It also recommends more training for script writers in the Hausa film industry.”]

[Abstract in English: An attempt was made in this study to bring to focus the various lessons encoded in Hausa films—the good and the bad. It is because of the great importance attached to cultural heritage that this study was undertaken so that those acts that go along with the values of Hausa culture and religion could be glorified and those that transgress against them could be shunned. There is an attempt to portray the victory of good values over the bad in the study.]

RESOURCES ON HAUSA FILM AT NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES

(NOTE: I have also included resources on Nigerian film in general in this list. Where possible, I have also included the number for finding these works in the departmental libraries at each university. My lists are dependent upon the state of record-keeping in each department and are probably not complete. If you are looking for bibliography on Hausa/Nigerian literature, television, or music, please email and ask. I collected and organized into a thematic list more references than I have put on this website. So far the universities included here are Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and Bayero University, Kano, University of Maiduguri, Maiduguri, and Usman Dan Fodiyo University, Sokoto.)
