“One Fine Day Film Workshops”: young filmmakers from Africa telling their story. The DW Akademie joint project is now accepting applications for the workshop beginning September 2013 in Kenya.

It was a moving experience when Tosh Gitonga last fall premiered his first feature film “Nairobi Half Life” in Berlin. The packed audience gave Gitonga a lengthy round of applause. The film has been running in Kenya for half a year and is considered to be Kenya’s most successful film ever.

“Nairobi Half Life” is the result of the first “One Fine Day Film Workshop” held in 2010. Another film, “Something Necessary”, resulted from the second workshop and recently started showing in Nairobi. The film is touring Germany this February and will be shown in several cities.

Africa’s film industry is attracting international interest thanks to the joint project run by ONE FINE DAY FILMS and DW Akademie. The first workshop and ensuing film production phase has already drawn attention to many talented African filmmakers.
The fourth workshop gets underway in Kenya this September. Starting now, African directors, camera operators, editors, scriptwriters, sound engineers and production designers can apply for this intense two-week workshop.

“One Fine Day Film” workshop in Nairobi, Kenya

The workshop is closely adapted to the needs of today’s African film enthusiasts and is aimed at professionalizing the craft of filmmaking. International filmmakers will train and guide a select group of up-and-coming talents involved in various aspects of filmmaking. Participants will then go on to shoot and produce their own film.

Participants will not only learn how to develop their ideas and put them into practice but will also receive support in how to attract African and international film markets.

Creating a group setting where budding filmmakers can exchange experiences and share a common goal also sustains their enthusiasm over the long run.

The One Fine Day Film workshops are a joint project by DW Akademie, ONE FINE DAY FILMS and GINGER INK. The project is supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, the Film und Medienstiftung NRW, the Goethe-Institut Kenya and ARRI Film & TV Services.

A) QUALIFICATION
Your  application  for  the One  Fine  Day  Film Workshop will  only  be  processed  if  you  meet  the  following requirements:
1. You  fill  out  the  application  form  correctly and  fully! UNCOMPLETED  APPLICATION  FORMS WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED OR READ! In case you are selected as participant, please be aware that your data may be published on
our website and on other public materials as provided by you.
2. You have worked on at least one short  film and/or you are a student at a  film school or in a film program and/or you have experience in the film industry.
3. You have submitted a complete application.
4. You are a citizen of an African country and reside in Africa and be at least 18 years of age by September, 1st 2013.
5. You  are  fluent  in  English  language,  written  and  spoken.  The  courses  will  be  conducted  in English.
6. If  you  apply  for  the  Editing  workshop,  you  know  how  to  work  with  either  Avid  Media Composer or Final Cut Pro (basic knowledge will not be sufficient).

Expenses
The  training course is conducted  free of charge. All  teaching materials and  relevant course  related costs will be covered by One Fine Day Film Workshop.
During the workshop catering will be provided for all workshop participants.
For participants travelling from abroad (and outside Nairobi), the One Fine Day Film Workshop will cover
the following costs – within the limits of pertinent German regulations –
• Accommodation for the duration of the workshop
•Costs for return journey between place of stay and Workshop location
Travel and hotels will be organized in coordination with One Fine Day Film Workshop. Please let us know if you have friends and family in Nairobi where you can stay during the time of the workshop.
Please note: There  is  no  provision  of  per  diems.  Participants  not  living  in  country  of  workshop should bring enough means for individual expenses to cover miscellaneous expenses, like phone calls home, laundry, and other
individual costs. Furthermore One Fine Day Film Workshop does not take out health, third party-liability or accident insurance.

Nollywood UP Training

The Nollywood UP Training is the first phase of the Nollywood UP, a partnership between Lagos State Government, Nollywood Workshops and the Coalition of Nollywood Guilds and Associations. Our team will provide cutting-edge film training to professional Nigerian filmmakers in the interest of building capacity industry-wide.

Filmmakers will be selected to participate through a competitive and transparent application process that considers their experience, skills and willingness to train others.

Professional filmmakers and instructors from the Nollywood Workshops training staff will facilitate intensive Master Classes in the areas of Cinematography, Directing, Sound, The Business of Film and Distribution, Screenwriting, Editing and Acting. The Nollywood UP Training team includes seasoned Hollywood and Nollywood filmmakers and film educators, including Director Tunde Kelani, Cinematographer Ed Gutentag (War of the Worlds, Austin Powers, Forrest Gump), Director Kunle Afolayon, Actor Ekpenyong “Kepy” Bassey-Inyang, Screenwriter Lee Zlotoff (MacGyver), and Producer Robert Caputo (National Geographic) among others.

The Nollywood UP Training will take place in Lagos Monday, December 3rd – Friday, December 7th, from 9am to 5pm. Applications close November 20, 2012.

The Commonwealth Foundation calls for short film proposals. Deadline 31 January 2012

The Commonwealth Foundation puts out a call for short film proposals from filmmakers age 18 or ove:

The Commonwealth Foundation is inviting filmmakers from across the Commonwealth to submit an idea for a short film about relationships. Individual filmmakers or collectives should submit a proposal which explores the theme of love in its broadest sense, whether inter-racial, inter-generational or within and between the sexes. The theme should be relevant to the filmmaker and their community.

We’re looking for original, bold and authentic films in any genre which entertain as well as stimulate and encourage debate both locally and globally.

Deadline for receipt of applications is 31 January 2012 (5pm GMT)

The entry guidelines are as follows:

Entry guidelines The film may be a drama or documentary, or a mixture of different genres, comedy or a more serious approach. The films can be made in your local language but in these cases must include sub-titles in English. The main aim of the film should be to engage and entertain, as well as stimulate and encourage debate, i.e. it should be an oblique and subtle exploration of a challenging issue in your community. The film should be up to 20 minutes (maximum) in length. Funding of between £3,000 and £8,000 per film is available. You must be available for an initial skills-building workshop in early March 2012 and available to make the film between March and May 2012. Depending on the sensitivity of the subject matter, the films may be made outside your community or country if necessary or appropriate. The resulting films will be shown locally and internationally to stimulate open debate around these issues, in local communities as well as national television and radio. The films may be shown anonymously if particularly sensitive.

TUNDE KELANI

A legend in the Nigerian Film industry Tunde Kelani belongs to a set of Nigerian directors who combine well-trained professionals with the latest technology to produce high quality films that adhere to international standards. Kelani has distinguished himself as one of the most experienced film makers in Nigeria, by his work in the 1980s as a celluloid cinematographer for Nigerian television and film productions. Since establishing Mainframe Productions in Oshodi, Lagos in 1992, Kelani has consistently released films like ‘Thunderbolt’ and ‘Saworoide’, which have become favourites in Yoruba households across Africa, Europe, and the Americas.

JACK CONROY

A legend in the Irish Film industry Jack Conroy has shot more than 20 international feature films while also working regularly in television. He is best known for his stunning cinematography on the Oscar winning and nominated films My Left Foot and The Field, starring Daniel Day-Lewis and Richard Harris, respectively.
When one looks at the list of people that have been portrayed by his camera, it reads like a virtual who’s who of the world’s greatest stars. Sophia Loren, Mickey Rourke, Christopher Lambert, Sir John Mills, James Coburn, Pierce Brosnan, Burt Reynolds, George. C. Scott, Bob Hoskins, John Hurt, Richard Harris, Angela Lansbury, Harvey Keitel, and Omar Sharif to name a few.

The Hollywood Reporter’s Best 25 Film School Rankings

For those interested in film school possibilities, here is the Hollywood Reporter‘s ranking of what it consideres to be the top 25 film schools in the world. As with any ranking, it must be taken with a grain of salt (most of the schools listed are in the United States [and the majority in the state of California], with only one in Asia, and four in Europe), but of particular interest to Nigerian filmmakers may be the less expensive non-American schools on this list.

Del-York International and New York Film Academy Workshops in Lagos, August 2011

Del York International is partnering with New York Film Academy to host a one month course on filmmaking in Lagos, in August 2011. Nigerian directors, Stephanie Okereke and multiple AMAA-award winning Kunle Afolayan have attended New York Film Academy courses in other locations. This is a unique opportunity for filmmakers and those interested in breaking into the industry to attend these courses in Nigeria. They have some SCHOLARSHIPS available, but the deadline is tomorrow, 11 July 2011 (It has been extended from the original deadline of 4 July 2011. UPDATE 12 July 2011: The deadline for scholarship applications has now been extended to 18 July 2011). If you are interested in attending the programme but don’t have a lot of funds available, be sure to register by tomorrow, so that you can apply for a scholarship.

The Del-York/New York Film Academy hands-on intensive Training Program, is scheduled to hold from August 8th to September 3rd, 2011 in Lagos. Previous editions of the course took place in Abuja in 2010. You can read testimonials of students here.

3 Week “Film in a Box Courses” from Africa Film Academy

The Africa Film Academy, an institution associated with the African International Film Festival and the Africa Movie Academy Awards, is offering 3 week all-round film courses, called “film in a box,” in acting, editing, cinematography, and scriptwriting across Africa in July 2011. The courses will available in Banjul, The Gambia, Johannesburg, South Africa, and Lagos, Nigeria.

Students are required to go from basics to some form of knowledge base on the area of the course they decide to follow at the end of the three week training courses.

The students are divided into two team that build on a production which is basically a film not exceeding 90 minutes in parallel and intersecting with the courses.

The Hausa Home Video Resource Centre recently subscribed to a newsletter from the Student Expert blog, which is doing excellent work gathering and making public information about academic opportunities all over the world.  The site has specific tabs for undergraduate bachelor degree opportunities, Masters Degree level opportunities, PhD opportunities, Postdoctoral opportunities, fellowships, awards, prizes, and conferences. Rather than re-post every slightly relevant opportunity, we thought it would be best to write a post on the site, and let you subscribe if you are interested. Although most of these opportunities are not related to film, it is useful for those looking for study opportunities. Programmes such as the Jane Klausman Women in Business Scholarships,  for example, would be useful to women who are interested in undergraduate or post-graduate business training to produce films.
