The 4th edition of the Eko International Film Festival, Lagos, which will take place from 18-23 November, is accepting film submissions until 30 September (with late submissions accepted until 15 October 2013).  See the rules on their site or quoted below:

ELIGIBILITY

Films must fit into one of the nine categories:Feature,Short, Fiction, comedy, documentaries, drama, Horror, Student Film 1 minute.

All music and other copyrighted materials used in the films must be original or filmmakers must have obtained permission in writing from the owner, such permissions to be submitted with the film.

All films must be submitted in English or subtitled in English.

GENERAL RULES:

Films must be submitted on DVD NTSC or PAL (please test before sending) and be available for screening on 35mm composite condition, Beta SP or Digi-Beta Video (NTSC only for festival screening).

Films must be available for screening during the Eko International Film Festival.

Narrative and Documentary films with U.S. distribution (obtained prior to being selected for EKOIFF screening) or films produced, financed or initiated by a major film studio or television network are ineligible for competition, but may be considered for special screening. Selection for screening will be determined no later than one month prior to the festival. Films that have screened at major cinemas and on cable network or distributed to theaters prior to the festival dates are also ineligible for competition.

Films that have played in Nigeria in a theatrical setting to a public audience are not eligible to be screened at the EKOIFF 2013.

Additional Narrative Feature Film Entry Requirements:

Feature-length Films must be 60 minutes or longer (recommended length 90 minutes).
Open to anyone (and all nationalities) who wishes to enter.

Additional Narrative Short Film Entry Requirements:

Films must be short narratives of 40 minutes or less (recommended length 10 minutes).
Open to anyone who wishes to enter.

Additional Narrative Student Short Film Entry Requirements:

Films must be short narratives of 40 minutes or less (recommended length 10 minutes).
Open only to students (must include proof of enrollment from accredited university or college).

One Minute Short Film Entry Requirements:

Entries must be short films of 1 minute (recommended length).
Award will be given to the best 1 minute film.
Open to any form of animation.
Open to anyone who wishes to enter.

Additional Documentary Feature Films Requirements

Films must be Documentaries, 40 minutes or longer
Open to anyone who wishes to enter.
Additional Documentary Short Film Requirements
Films must be Short Documentaries, 40 minutes or less
Open to anyone who wishes to enter.

SUBMISSION IS FREE

Please Note: Eko International Film Festival does not collect entry fees.
In a similar respect the EKOIFF does not solicit films to be in competition.
Only films submitted will be considered for competition.

Returns and Acknowledgments:
VHS tapes, DVDs, and press materials will not be returned under any circumstances. They will be destroyed after the final screenings at the film festival.
Include a self-addressed, stamped postcard for each submission if you wish acknowledgment of the receipt of your entry.

Safety and piracy issue

The festival is concerned that filmmakers’ rights should be protected against piracy. EKOIFF is establishing procedures that will guarantee these are up to profession’s best practice. These are inspired by the anti piracy actions taken in the USA and worldwide.

Durban International Film Festival Call for Entries for 34th edition

The Durban International Film Festival (DIFF), invites filmmakers to submit their entries for its 34^th edition which takes place from 18^th to 28^th July 2013. Where Is The Market For Documentary Films

The Committee For Relevant Art (CORA) is presenting the 90^th Art Stampede on Sunday, March 25, with the theme: Where Is the Market For Documentary Films?  It will hold from 12.noon, at Terra Kulture, the Nigerian Cultural Centre, on Victoria Island.

The art stampede is a quarterly, discursive forum around the arts and culture production. This edition is being held, in collaboration with iREP, under the aegis of the iREP Documentary Film Festival. It will feature a keynote address by Sandra Obiago, Founder/Director of Communicating For Change and a panel of discussants including the filmmakers Mahmoud Ali-Balogun and Charles Novia.

The “creative treatment of actuality” has been commercially successful at the box office, elsewhere in the world. Works like Fahrenheit 9/11, Super Size Me, Food, Inc., Earth, March of the Penguins, and An Inconvenient Truth have put good money in their producers’ pockets. Can this happen here? What is the mindset of the broadcast houses? Even if they are interested, does this necessarily translate to living wages for the producer? This edition of the art stampede will look at the economics of documentary film making and ask a key question: can this vocation be a career pursuit? Can documentary filmmaking pay its way in Nigeria? What are the possible distribution outlets? What is the role of broadcasting?

There will be, as always, an interactive conversation with the audience that’s expected to include film and communications students, filmmakers, professional broadcasters; TV’s programme managers, cultural affairs officers in government, writers, dancers, visual artists as well as the general public.

Two day Plateau International Film Festival set to begin in Jos on November 25

The 2nd Edition of Plateau International Film Festival (PIFF) commences November 25th, at the National Film Institute, Jos. This festival is being organized by Media initiative on film and social development, a non-governmental organisation that focuses on social and economic development. Its aim is to use film and media to educate, entertain and to promote creativity, credibility, responsibility and good governance. The 1st Edition of Festival (2010) was a success, recording over 40 film entries, and with screening, discussions, and seminars. We believe this edition will be a greater success because of the teamwork and drive by the PIFF organizing team in planning and executing this year’s event. Our major partners are Alliance Française and Plateau State Tourism Corporation. Again this year, the festival will be a platform for education, interaction and information. The recognition of film as a tool for peaceful co-existence is what informed our theme: Art and Peace. The Director General of the National Film and Video Censors Board, Mr. Emeka Mba, will deliver the Keynote address. Scholars, administrators and seasoned filmmakers will discuss relevant topics as well as films screened for the purpose. The festival will also feature Master Classes/Workshops in Directing, Scriptwriting, and Film Music as well as a seminar on Information Management for relevant state and federal ministries as well as Local Government Council Information Officers. Lights, Camera, Africa! 2011 Film Festival, Lagos, 30 September -2 October 2011

Reel Life Film Club announces:

For the first time ever, the African Film Festival, Inc, New York (AFF) and the Reel Life Film Club at The Life House are partnering to host “Lights, Camera, AFRICA! 2011”, a film festival showcasing some of the most exciting and original pieces of African cinema from within the continent and the Diaspora.

The film festival will hold over the Nigerian Independence day holidays from Friday 30 September to Sunday 2 October 2011 at The Life House, Lagos and other locations which will be confirmed in due course.

For almost twenty years, AFF has bridged the divide between post-colonial Africa and the American public through the medium of film. AFF’s unique place in the international arts community is distinguished not only by leadership in festival management but a comprehensive approach to the advocacy of African film and culture.

The Reel Life Film Club at The Life House aims to support the work of the AFF in ensuring that stories by African filmmakers are also enjoyed by an African audience that does not often have access to good quality African films.

The Lights, Camera, AFRICA! 2011 Film Festival aims to stimulate discourse on issues and experiences that are rooted in the African experience. In this way, African stories will also be consumed by those who live them.

This year’s inaugural theme is centred around the heady days of colonial Africa and the continent’s response to these challenges in more recent times. Call for Films: Nollywood Film Festival, India to be held 1-10 October 2011. Film Submission Deadline 25 September 2011

From Film Afrique.  Blues and Hills has clarified, upon inquiry, that the submission deadline for films is 25 September. The festival will hold October 1-10.

Nollywood goes to Bollywood

New Delhi, the capital of India, is set to host Nollywood filmmakers this October in celebration of Nigeria’s Independence Day. The Nollywood Film Festival-India will be a celebration of film, music and arts festival for new talents from Nigeria. It will feature Nigerian film practitioners, fashion designers and musicians.

Co-director of Nollywood Film Festival and CEO of Big Hitz Records, Henry Money Samuel, comments from his Delhi base: “There is a large community of Africans, especially West Africans living in Delhi alone, which is where we are taking the festival to, for the first time. We hope to organize exhibitions; workshops and cultural tours that will make them connect with their roots.”

Films will be submitted for screening and discussions. The final night is an awards night, where winning films will be recognized and celebrated. Filmmakers are encouraged to submit their films. Send an email and trailer to Dera Igwe at info@bluesandhills.com.

Mexican Film Festival, Silverbird Cinemas, Abuja, 16-17 September 2011 (Isyaku Jalingo’s Hausa film Ciki Daya will be shown on 17 September 2011)

The Embassy of Mexico in Nigeria in Collaboration with the Nigerian Film Corporation presents the Maiden Edition of the Mexican Film Festival 16-17 September 2011, at Silverbird Cinemas,  behind Yar’adua Centre, Abuja.

Two Nigerian films will also be shown. Mak Kusare’s film Duty on 16 September and Isyaka Jalingo’s film Ciki Daya (which won Best Nigerian Language film at the Zuma Film Festival 2010) on 17 September 2011. For the full schedule, see below:

INTERNATIONAL IMAGES FILM FESTIVAL FOR WOMEN (IIFF) 2011

BACKGROUND TO THE FESTIVAL
The International Images Film Festival for Women (IIFF), the only annual women’s festival South of the Sahara, this year celebrates its 10th anniversary. Women Filmmakers of Zimbabwe (WFOZ) is inviting you and your organization to make IIFF 2011 a special celebration for the festival, its beneficiaries and the women activists who run it. IIFF was founded in 2002 by WFOZ in response to the proliferation of beauty contests at that time in a bid to unpack the notion of women as beings to be observed through the male gaze. Under the theme Women With Goals, this year, the festival takes place from November 18 to 25 in Harare and from December 1 to 4 in Bulawayo. WFOZ invites you to celebrate with them their biggest achievement of a decade of film screenings where the lives of mothers, sisters and daughters have been portrayed in a positive and enriching way as IIFF turns 10.

INTERNATIONAL IMAGES FILM FESTIVAL FOR WOMEN 2011

The theme for this year’s festival, Women With Goals reflects the United Nations’ Millenium Development Goals (M.D.Gs). As women cannot be removed from the development equation and are not only limited to goal number 3, the theme explores the goals women set for themselves and for society, challenges they come across and gaps that need bridging as far as those goals are concerned.

Questions we are asking are, can women achieve these goals, what prevents them from achieving these goals, how these obstacles can be overcome and how society reacts to gains made by women.

Finally, the theme celebrates the success stories of those women who have set and attained their goals as an encouragement and challenge to other women to take action. These are women who do not believe in lip service but believe in walking the talk.

While the film should have all the attributes of good cinema, including good production values and engagement values, it should also show some analysis of the woman or women featured. Production date is irrelevant, but the film must have a woman in leading role.

Should you wish to participate but not be in a position to make a recommendation concerning a film, IIFF would be happy to undertake a search and provide a film to be approved by your mission. IIFF would only ask that the mission covers the costs of bringing the film to Zimbabwe and returning it to its origin.

FORMATS
35 millimetre feature films are automatically admitted into the main competition. The awards are especially designed by famous Zimbabwean artiste Glen Cable, popularly known in the arts circle as Funkie Loader whose depictions of women in iron appear to leap and embrace the world in exuberance. Betacam SP and DVD features, shorts and documentaries are also programmed in other categories.

PUBLICITY
To ensure that your film receives the audience it deserves, and for inclusion in the festival catalogue, we request you to send as soon as possible a press kit which should include a short synopsis, technical details, major cast and crew list and stills from the film. To raise the profile of your entry further, posters would be appreciated.

Finally, all diplomatic missions sponsoring films are mentioned in our catalogue. All missions and organizations supporting the festival in cash or additional kind are acknowledged with their logo in our catalogue and any other publications that may be produced from time to time.

SCHEDULE
The festival is scheduled for November 18 to 25, 2011 in Harare and December 1 to 3 Bulawayo.

PARTICIPATION
In addition to sponsored films, we are also appealing for donations in cash or kind to continue the success of the festival. Our budget itemises the areas in which contributions may be made in cash or kind. This budget will be sent to you upon request should you be interested in contributing beyond the sponsorship of a film.
